We left San Jose behind. We could come back again sometime, when it was just the three of us, and no one was trying to touch us -- no sleep would be lost. As the hills on highway 152 rolled by, I realized we were home, and we'd never have to go back to Boise. Maybe, i thought, she'd get better. Maybe there were such things as miracles. Maybe we could work this all out...
She died a month later.
